Engineering Project
Engineering projects help 4-H members use a systematic process to design and test a solution to a problem.
- Learn about engineering design process
- Explain in your own words the problem you are trying to solve
- Be able to describe how you will know if your design is successful in solving the problem
- Build and test your design
- Be able to discuss how your solution solved/did not solve the problem
- Use engineering design process to develop solution to identified problem
- Develop a way to measure the success of your design
- Test your solution, make adjustments and retest your design at least once
- Be able to discuss how your adjustments affected the success of your design
- Investigate an engineering field related to your problem
- Work as part of a team to identify a problem and develop a solution
- Research information to brainstorm and develop solutions to the problem
- Using engineering terms and vocabulary in describing your project
- Test your solution, make adjustments and retest your design multiple times to identify your optimal solution
OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE
- Interview a local engineer
- Visit NASA’s STEM Opportunities and Activities for Students online
- Attend an engineering themed summer camp
- Participate in North Dakota 4-H’s Engineering Design Challenge (Chain Reaction Machine Challenge)
- Visit a science or engineering museum
- Interested in a college education in the area of Engineering, Construction, Computer Science, Manufacturing? Schedule a visit with North Dakota State University to explore these majors: College of Engineering
CAREERS
There are many exciting careers that can be pursued in engineering. These include: Material engineer , aerodynamic engineer, protective gear designer, ski design engineer, civil engineer, structural engineer, biomechanical engineer, environmental engineer, data engineer, thermodynamic engineer.
Help your club or county with a 4-H STEM program, use an engineering design process to solve a problem in your community, organize a weekend or summer day project that involves exploring an engineering project.
Give a presentation about your engineering project, create a video about an engineering innovation, draw a diagram of your interpretation of the engineering design process.
Imagine a product that would solve a problem; write down the steps it would take to create and sell that product, design and create a device that will automatically water a plant and sell this product at a local farmers market, design an app that will remind you to do your homework and research ways to sell this app.
Use an engineering design process to design and develop an app, use technology to measure, analyze, test or record your engineering design solutions.
Communication Arts, Project EXPO, Regional Engineering Design Challenge Kickoff event, State Engineering Design Challenge contest, Attend 4-H STEM Camp or Project Day.
Send an email to an engineering professor at a college to ask for advice on your engineering design project, interview an engineer in your area, ask an engineering in your area to help coach your 4-H Engineering Design Challenge team.
Design, build and test a solar oven that rotates to follow the sun
Design, build and test models of bridges to see which will hold the most weight. Show pictures or draw diagrams of your designs and record the maximum weight that it held without breaking
Design, build and test a paper airplane launcher
Design, build and test a model of a gate that will open and close using pneumatic controls
Design, build and test a tiny dancing figure using a homopolar motor
