Advancing Wetland Science

The Wet Ecosystem Research Group (WERG) is dedicated to understanding wetlands at every scale, from microscopic processes to entire landscapes, and translating that knowledge into solutions for real-world water challenges.

Biological Sciences

Our Story

WERG was established in the Department of Biological Sciences in Fall 2006 by Dr. Marinus Otte and Dr. Donna Jacob. The group originated as the Wetland Ecology Research Group at University College Dublin, Ireland, where it operated from 1992 to 2006.

In 2014, Dr. Jacob transitioned to the private sector, where she continues her work as an environmental scientist with Houston Engineering in Fargo.

Research Focus

Our research encompasses anything and everything related to wetlands, with projects spanning a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. In recent years, WERG’s work has expanded to address broader questions of water availability and water quality, reflecting the growing global importance of sustainable water resources.

Current EPA-funded research projects include:

  • Ecosystem services of restored Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) wetlands, examined as a function of restoration age
  • Watershed-scale water quality improvement, exploring how much wetland area is needed to meaningfully improve water quality across entire watersheds

Global Collaboration & Impact

In his role as a Fulbright Specialist, Dr. Otte is currently collaborating with Dr. Tatiana Lobato de Magalhães on an international research project focused on water availability and quality in the Sierra Gorda region of Querétaro, Mexico. This work highlights WERG’s commitment to addressing water challenges at both local and global scales.

Leadership in Wetland Science

Dr. Marinus Otte serves as Editor-in-Chief of the journal WETLANDS, reinforcing WERG’s leadership role in advancing wetland research and scholarship worldwide. YouTube
