Overparenting, or developmentally inappropriate involvement in adolescents’ daily lives, has become an increasingly visible family dynamic, potentially interfering with youths’ autonomy, competence and decision-making development. Alexandra Main will highlight findings from her program of research examining how overparenting is expressed in real-time parent-adolescent interactions, how adolescents perceive these behaviors and how overparenting behavior and adolescent perceptions of such behavior jointly relate to psychological adjustment. The lecture will conclude with implications for family interventions that promote healthier parent-adolescent dynamics.
